New Kensington police say Ohio woman had nearly 2 ounces of meth in van stopped for driving without lights
New Kensington police accused an Ohio woman of selling drugs after nearly 2 ounces of crystal meth as well as heroin and packaging material were found during a traffic stop, according to authorities.
Kallin Delray Stewart, 34, of East Canton was charged with a felony count of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver along with five related drug charges and a traffic violation.
Stewart was released from the Westmoreland County jail after a bail agency posted a $10,000 bond on her behalf. She faces a preliminary hearing Thursday, March 23, before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr., court records show.
Police wrote in a criminal complaint charging Stewart that an officer pulled her over shortly before 9 p.m. March 11 along Ninth Street because the headlights of the minivan she was driving were off.
The officer wrote in the arrest papers that he saw a glass bong with a burned, tar-like substance that was suspected to be methamphetamine.
Stewart told police about the bong when she was asked if there was anything illegal inside the vehicle, the complaint said.
When the officer told Stewart that he was not concerned about “weed,” she responded: “I never said it (the bong) was for weed,” according to the complaint.
Stewart, who had a small dog in the van with her, was seen trying to hide a clear plastic baggie in her backpack as she retrieved the animal to get out of the minivan, police said.
A police narcotics dog was used to check for drugs after Stewart denied having any in the vehicle, police said.
After the dog “hit” on the smell of narcotics in the van, Stewart agreed to allow police to search inside, according to the complaint.
Inside a pink Calvin Klein backpack that was behind the center console, police found 10 bags of crystal meth that weighed a total of 47 grams, along with two bags of suspected heroin that were sent to a crime lab for testing and to determine their weight, the complaint said.
A digital scale, packaging material and $1,002 also were found inside the minivan, according to investigators.
