New Ken shooting victim in stable condition, did not know teen accused of shooting him
The man shot Monday in New Kensington’s Valley Royal Court was in stable condition Tuesday, according to Melanie Jones, spokeswoman for the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office.
Jones said the man did not know Logan James King, 17, who is charged in connection with the shooting.
King is charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, attempts to cause bodily injury with a weapon, possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a firearm by a person not permitted to carry a firearm, according to court records.
King was known to New Kensington police, according to Jones.
Authorities believe a fight led to the shooting.
Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, New Kensington police heard gunshots from the Valley Royal Court area, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case. The Valley Royal Court apartment complex is near New Kensington City Hall, the police department and the district judge’s office near Fifth Avenue.
Officers located the man shot in the back of a car. He was conscious and told police that “Logan” shot him, according to the complaint.
The man was shot twice, once in his upper left chest and the other in his right hip, according to police. He was driven in a personal vehicle to a nearby hospital and later flown to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, authorities said.
Witness accounts state that, after the man was shot, King ran into an apartment at Valley Royal Court, the complaint said. SWAT teams, along with a large police presence, established a perimeter around the apartment.
King surrendered without incident, police said.
King told police he was outside an apartment when the man approached him and began to push him, the complaint said. King said that as he stumbled backward, he pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired multiple shots at the man.
King said he did not see a weapon in the man’s hands, the complaint said.
Jones said the gun’s ownership is being investigated.
King was arraigned Monday night and denied bail. He is being held in the Westmoreland County jail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18 before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr.
