Wildflower Bakery in Downtown New Kensington is celebrating its one-year anniversary with an expansion.
The bakery will expand by 1,200 square feet and open a storefront along 940 Fifth Ave., New Kensington, in addition to its existing entrance at 940 Barnes St.
Owner Hailey Sabot plans to open the new space Nov. 16.
“I’m calling it the Begonia Bistro,” said Sabot, 25, of Lower Burrell. “It’ll be an extension of the bakery, and be more sit-down and grab-and-go.”
Wildflower Bakery offers sweet treats such as cakes, cookies, pastries, pies and quiche. With the expansion, Sabot plans new products such as lunch items, donuts, teas and breakfast sandwiches.
Business hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
“The bakery is very bright, very colorful,” Sabot said. “Over there, it will be a little darker, and a calm type vibe.”
Sabot said she’s humbled by the community’s support over the past year. She believes the bakery’s products and the employees’ friendliness to customers set the business apart.
“We’re baking every single day,” Sabot said. “I think that brought a lot of people in. We make it fun, exciting and new.
“All of our customers have been so supportive from the beginning. We have a little bit of everything for everybody.”
A 2018 Burrell High School graduate, Sabot attended Westmoreland County Community College’s culinary program and worked with the pastry chef at Oakmont Country Club for three years.
She has a team of six employees.
“We’re constantly learning,” she said. “I couldn’t do it without everybody. We’re super excited.”
Wildflower Bakery’s expansion is another Fifth Avenue storefront getting filled within the past year.
Spin studio Rhythm Ridez, 878 Fifth Ave., and retail store Ethical Hope, 938 Fifth Ave., underwent expansions this year. Newly- opened downtown businesses include ice cream and candy store Lucky Duck Candy Co., 1001 Fifth Ave., and Italian restaurant and cigar bar Vinci Winery, 1021 Barnes St.
“Wildflower Bakery is simply awesome, and I am really glad that they are expanding,” said Mayor Thomas Guzzo. “This should not be a surprise to anyone. Their baked goods are amazing and always in demand.”
Guzzo said the store is inviting. He agreed that bakery employees prioritize customer service and make people feel welcome.
“This is a great move for them and a very welcome addition for the city as another positive step,” he said.
Sabot is also encouraged by Downtown New Kensington’s business growth.
“A while back, it was dead,” she said. “It’s great seeing a lot of the new businesses bringing it back to life.”
Sabot hopes Wildflower Bakery’s future is as bright as it was the past year.
“I’m happy we can keep continuing what we’re doing,” she said. “I hope we can be here for a long time.”
