A driver suffered a minor injury when a pickup truck hit a minivan and then crashed into the Small World Daycare in the 4300 block of Route 66 in Washington Township on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

No children were injured when a pickup truck traveling along Route 66 in Washington Township hit a minivan before crashing into a day care center Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Washington Township Police Chief Scott Slagle said a woman was dropping off her son at the Small World Daycare in the 4300 block of Route 66 at about 9 a.m. when her minivan was hit by the truck.

“She was slowing down to turn into the daycare center with her son and (the pickup truck) hit her then went past her, sideswiped and hit the daycare,” the chief said.

The pickup driver truck told investigators that the crash happened because his brakes failed, according to the chief.

Slagle said the woman driving the minivan was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville for treatment of an undisclosed injury.

No children or staff in the building were injured, he said.

A school bus was dispatched to the daycare at about 9:30 a.m. to evacuate 19 children and several staff members from the building to Kiski Area Upper Elementary.

The crash was reported at 9:02 a.m., and first responders arrived by 9:09 a.m., according to authorities.

Crews from Murrysville, Vandergrift and Washington Township responded to the scene, which was cleared shortly before 10:30 a.m., officials said.
