ATI Vandergrift officials said there was no risk to the community after a chemical reaction that impacted air quality for workers.
Emergency crews were called to the plant along Lincoln Avenue at about 12:45 p.m., according to Westmoreland County dispatchers.
No one was injured, ATI spokeswoman Natalie Gillespie said.
“A reaction occurred when a third-party contractor was cleaning out secondary containments for storage tanks,” she said. “The work was being done in the normal process of removing snowmelt and rainwater.”
The reaction was contained. Employees most closely involved in the process were sent for medical evaluation.
ATI Vandergrift employs about 250 people.
“With emergency services, ATI methodically monitored all areas of the facility before issuing an all-clear,” Gillespie said.
Workers at the plant along Lincoln Avenue were cleared to return to work by 3 p.m.
