The former Miner’s Clinic property in New Kensington is now in the city’s hands.

Nonprofit groups Keystone Hope Development and Westmoreland Community Action donated about 8 acres of land off Powers Drive, on both sides of Martin Avenue, City Clerk John Zavadak said.

In the 1950s, the Russellton Medical Group opened the Powers Drive facility in an effort to serve the mining community.

The clinic closed in 1998 and the building, itself, was later dismantled.

Mandy Zalich, CEO of Westmoreland Community Action, said her nonprofit acquired the property several years ago.

Zalich said the organization considered putting housing on the parcel but those plans never came to fruition.

“In talking with the city, they’re able to utilize that and potentially use it for future projects. It seemed like a better fit,” Zalich said. “They’ll be able to use it for different community needs, or projects, or usage for residents.”

Zalich said the property is vacant. Surrounding property includes private townhouses.

New Kensington’s plans for the property have not been determined. Mayor Thomas Guzzo did not respond to a request for comment.

“I would suppose at some point we will market the property for development,” Zavadak said.
