What does Westmoreland County do if two candidates in the May primary are tied for the last spot on the ballot?

The winner is determined by the candidates who gets the ball with the No. 1 printed on it when selecting from an opaque jar with two balls in it, said Beth Lechman, Elections Bureau director. The person who gets to select the ball is the one whose last name is first in the alphabet, Lechman said.

That winner-takes-all contest at noon Friday at the Elections Bureau in the county courthouse will pit Norwin School Board candidates Keith Genicola against Joanna Jordan, for the Republican nomination. Jordan edged Genicola, 1,087 votes to 1,086 votes among those who went to the polls. But, Lechman said the lone absentee ballot had a vote for Genicola, not Jordan, among the five candidates who voters could choose from.

In the battle for two seats on the New Kensington-Arnold School District, Eric Doutt and Deborah Schreckengost each got 316 votes for the Democratic nomination to represent Region I.
