Officials seeking teen resident to represent Aspinwall as junior council person
Aspinwall officials are seeking a teenage resident with an interest in local government to serve as council’s next junior member.
Offered through the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, the program provides high school students the chance to get a first-hand glimpse into the daily workings of their municipality.
The Junior Council Person program aims to develop leadership skills, boost political awareness and encourage young people to have a voice in their community. They can’t vote on agenda items but are invited to weigh in on discussions.
“It teaches them how local government works and the impact they can have on the community,” Aspinwall Manager Melissa O’Malley said.
Most recently, Fox Chapel Area graduate Paige Asbury spent a two-year stint learning how small government works.
Already equipped with an interest in public policy, Asbury said the role solidified her desire to serve her local community.
Another recent Fox Chapel Area graduate, Hannah Drum, served the past two years with Blawnox Council and said the experience stirred a passion for politics in her.
The teen plans to attend the University of Miami this fall but said she sees herself running for an office at some level wherever she settles down.
“It opened my eyes to what happens every day, and I feel a lot more importance should be placed on voting in local races,” Drum said.
Blawnox Manager Kathy Ulanowicz said it was helpful to hear from a teen’s viewpoint about issues in the community.
Founded in 2000, the Junior Council Program aims to get teens involved in local policy-making but also serves as a teaching moment for their older peers.
“They help to provide insight from the younger generation,” O’Malley said.
Anyone interested in filling the Aspinwall position would be expected to attend council’s two meetings each month. The board meets next via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2.
