Springdale Community Day plans to be just that when the event hits Lincoln Avenue near Veterans Memorial Field on Saturday.

Deb Sigmund of the Springdale Team of Active Residents said the event is a group effort between STAR, the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and borough council. It aims to provide residents an opportunity to gather and celebrate around the July Fourth holiday, she said.

“I think Springdale really needs something right now because of the plant closing and the smokestacks down. I think we need some positive things happening in town,” she said. “… We’re going to do something and have everyone gather again and have a good time.”

Officials will close the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue for Community Day, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sigmund said there will be about 40 vendors, from artisans and craftsmen to food trucks and local sports booster clubs.

“It’s gonna be big,” Sigmund said with a laugh.

She said the day will be “busy and fun,” with many different features. STAR will be sponsoring a food drive where all donations benefit the Lower Valley Community Food Bank. For each can or food item donated, people will get entered into a basket drawing.

A car show will be at the parking lot behind the Leaning Cask, and a UPMC Mobile Unit will provide health screenings on Walters Lane at the corner of Lincoln Avenue.

Educational material and a scavenger hunt for children will be provided by the Rachel Carson Homestead. In addition, Busy Times Book Store, at 826 Pittsburgh St., will offer one free book for each child. People can pick up free craft bags from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Springdale Library, 331 School St.

“We’re hoping to make this an annual event,” Sigmund said.

Jeannie Harmon, with the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire company will feature a touch-a-truck and equipment demonstrations, a free basket raffle for gift cards and a 50-50 drawing. Department glasses and mugs will be sold. Emergency management personnel will offer fire extinguisher training.

Harmon said the community day is a great way to showcase the borough and for people to get together.

“It’s just to get people out to really see what Springdale has to offer,” she said.
