Paws Across Pittsburgh leads effort to raise money for sick dog

Spice, a small dog found in North Braddock, was close to death.

Emaciated and dehydrated, Spice’s temperature was so low, he was suffering hypothermia.

The skin-and-bones terrier mix was in no condition to go to a shelter.

Instead, Springdale-based Paws Across Pittsburgh was called.

Spice was less than 3 pounds.

“He hadn’t seen food or water for a long time,” said Vicki Marietta of Harrison City. The group has members across the Alle-Kiski Valley.

“He couldn’t stand up, and he hadn’t had water or food for a long, long time,” Marietta said.

Spice spent five days in critical condition at the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in the North Hills.

Spice was a small dog with little hope despite the love and care of PVSEC and Paws.

Marietta took him home early this month.

Progress has been slow.

He is on fluids, medicine and small amounts of special food that Marietta gives to him every four hours.

Now under foster care, Spice’s health is slowly turning the corner.

“Spice is sitting up now,” Marietta said. “He has an ulcerated eye and he will likely lose it in the future, but he seems to be getting better.”

Spice is one of 1,500 dogs assisted by the nonprofit Paws Across Pittsburgh in the past 2 1/2 years, Marietta said.

The organization relies on help from people who care about dogs.

Thus far, about $2,100 has been collected toward Spice’s $4,000 in medical bills.

“We need some help,” Marietta said.

Paws Across Pittsburgh is a foster home-based animal rescue and does not maintain a central location. All rescued animals are placed with foster families throughout the region until they can be permanently adopted.
