A Pittsburgh man died after jumping from the Route 28 bridge over Buffalo Creek.

State police are investigating the public death of William I. Tegethoff, 45.

Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers said Tegethoff died from multiple blunt force trauma. Myers ruled his death a suicide.

Tegethoff jumped from the high-level bridge near the border of Armstrong and Butler counties.

Calls from witnesses were first reported just after 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

An empty SUV sat parked on the berm of the bridge deck.

The coroner’s office was called and Deputy Coroner Timothy Graham pronounced Tegethoff dead at the scene.

State and Buffalo Township police were on the bridge, but traffic was moving normally on Route 28.

Other crews were accessing the scene via the Butler-Freeport Community Trail at the Monroe Road trailhead. The trail was shut down at that point. The trail is the only access to the deep gorge the bridge spans. There are no roads in the immediate vicinity.

Buffalo Township VFD Chief Matt Cypher said the zone served as the main staging ground for emergency crews.

Crews from Buffalo Township, Saxonburg and Harrison were among those at the scene.
