A lack of foot traffic and business is driving Petland out of the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer.

Store owner Alan Caplan said they will be leaving the mall by the end of August.

The last day for business will be Monday.

“Unfortunately, we’d love to stay with the mall, but we can’t support the business anymore,” he said.

Caplan said foot traffic has decreased dramatically in the last few years. Staying in the mall space is costing them more money than they are making.

Pet supplies are marked down from 50% to 75% off regular prices.

Seven puppies remain that are available to purchase at a discounted rate as well. All are poodle mixes.

The store has been in the mall for more than 10 years. They moved into their spot in June 2008.

Caplan said the store will be moving to the North Hills area, but said they hadn’t signed a lease on a specific space yet.

Petland joins a growing number of businesses that have either closed or left the mall in Fraser for another space. Mostly recently, Kay Jewelers moved out of the mall and into the neighboring The Village at Pittsburgh Mills development.

Kitchen Collection and a locally owned arcade also have closed, and the mall lost Charlotte Russe after the company announced in March it would close all stores and file for bankruptcy.

Large sections of the mall remain empty while other parts have become sites for non-retail options. Among them are Allegheny Health Network’s Citizens School of Nursing, a church, a gym and several children’s sports facilities.

A message left for mall management wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday.
