With summer just around the corner, Pittsburgh Brewing Co. is inviting customers “Poolside.”

The brewery, located in East Deer’s Creighton neighborhood, launched its newest product by Block House Brewing on Wednesday, a shandy beer.

Block House is one of Pittsburgh Brewing Co.’s brands, said spokeswoman Katie Henningsen. Poolside beer replaces Summer Break. Others in the Block House brand include Pumpkin and Double Chocolate Bock.

“Summer Break was kind of a shandy,” Henningsen said. “This is still a shandy, but it has kind of a lighter taste.”

Poolside debuts Friday at the brewery’s gift shop, 150 Ferry St. It hits the regional market at the end of April, Henningsen said, and is only available through the summer.

The beer will come in cans rather than bottles. It will be sold in packs of 15 for $18.99.

“We decided to go with cans because we wanted people to enjoy it on a boat or poolside,” Henningsen said.

Wednesday’s run went for 10 hours and produced 180,000 cans, or 12,000 15-packs.

“It’s a very refreshing drink,” Henningsen said. “It’s the perfect summer beer.”

Amphitheater update

During Wednesday’s tour, brewery officials also gave an update on the site’s planned amphitheater.

The venue’s summer concert series kicks off June 29 with a Jimmy Buffett tribute band. Tickets are still available and can be purchased on the brewery’s website.

Zoso, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, will take the stage July 6. The brewery also is hosting a benefit event at 2 p.m. for local police dog units. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Allegheny Valley Regional, New Kensington, West Deer, Southern Armstrong, Lower Burrell and Kiski Township departments.

Tickets cost $35 and can be purchased on the brewery’s website.

A third concert this summer is pending, Henningsen said.

Concerts this year will hold up to 6,000 people. Officials anticipate the amphitheater being complete by next summer, at which point it will hold as many as 15,000 people.
