It shouldn’t be much longer before Chipotle fans can get their favorite Mexican food at the Village at Pittsburgh Mills.

Frazer supervisors last month approved a land development plan by Cardinal Realty, which is eyeing property in the Lowe’s parking lot to build a free-standing restaurant.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is expected to be constructed in the corner of the lot nearest to Starbucks, along Village Center Drive.

Cardinal Realty representatives could not be reached for comment.

“They’re getting their ducks in a row, and a building permit could come soon,” Supervisor Lori Ziencik said.

Ziencik said there is no timeline for construction, but it could begin in upcoming months.

The developers are waiting for Allegheny County officials to approve a subdivision request.

“I think it will be a nice addition to the area,” Ziencik said.

Chipotle, founded in 1993 in Denver, has grown to include more than 3,200 sites across the country. Its “fast-but-fresh” approach is a hit for customers seeking tacos, burritos, salads and bowls that are made within the customers’ view from behind a window.

According to the company website, the restaurant’s fourth-quarter revenue increased 11.2% to $2.2 billion over the same time in 2021.

The restaurant is noted for its sustainability goals, including a program to recycle plastic gloves worn during food preparation into waste bags that are used in-house.

The chain boasts using only 53 ingredients, and its slogan emphasizes “the only ingredient that is hard to pronounce at Chipotle is ‘chipotle.’ ”

Locally, there are Chipotle restaurants at The Waterworks mall near Fox Chapel, in Hampton and in Monroeville.
