A 24-year-old man was shot Thursday morning at an apartment complex in Plum.

Police responded to Plum Park Apartments on Deborah Jane Drive near Universal Road in Plum’s Regency Park neighborhood around 7:30 a.m.

The man was shot as he came out of his apartment to get into his car, according to a statement from Plum police Chief Larry Conley.

The man was treated at the scene for his wounds and taken to a local hospital by Plum Emergency Medical Services.

Police from Plum and Allegheny County blocked off Deborah Jane Drive while investigating. They placed a gray sedan on a flatbed truck and removed it from a parking lot in front of the victim’s building. Shattered glass could be seen on the ground where it was parked.

Stefanie Mayo, who lives across the street from where the shooting happened, said she heard five shots fired in rapid succession after returning home from her job as a phlebotomist. She said she did not hear any disturbance before the shooting.

Mayo said police arrived within about 10 minutes of the shots being fired.

“It was impressive,” Mayo said of the response.

Plum Borough School District restricted visitor access to its buildings as police investigated.

The school district said it was notified around 8 a.m. about a domestic incident that possibly involved a shooting. It posted a message to its website stating that “operations inside the school will remain normal, however, visitors will not be permitted in any of our buildings.”

The district lifted the restriction by 10:40 a.m., when it posted a message to its app indicating Plum police had informed the district it was “safe to resume normal operating procedures.” Police left the shooting scene before 11 a.m.
