Plum volunteers to bring back drive-thru Easter celebration in early April
Plum families will have a chance to socially distance with the Easter Bunny in a few weeks.
A Drive-Thru Eggstravaganza is set for April 3 at the public works facility along Old Mine Road.
It is organized by Plum Rotary president Mona Costanza and her volunteers.
The idea for the event came about last year as officials scrambled to find a way to keep a holiday tradition rolling during the early months of the pandemic.
“People are looking for something to do,” Costanza said. “It’s not a traditional egg hunt.”
The public works garage was transformed into a covid-free Easter home complete with bunny volunteers wearing masks and gloves.
Borough buildings and grounds supervisor Joe Fischetti said this year’s layout will be more festive and efficient.
“It’s going to be a good one,” he said. “We open up a couple bays; decorate it up a little bit. The layout is pretty easy. We use some of the big trucks as a lane barrier, put some lights up and make it as festive as possible.”
Borough manager Michael Thomas is expected to chauffeur the Easter Bunny around while some wait in line so all families can share a moment with the furry friend.
Families must register at plumboro.com and select a time between 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to participate. Registration opens March 15.
Last year, 500 families filled up the time slots within 48 hours.
Costanza said the goal is to serve 750 families this time around.
Participants drive up to the facility and will be greeted by a volunteer, who checks their registration.
Children receive a “bunny bag” full of eggs stuffed with treats as well as cookies from Oakmont Bakery.
Fischetti believes families will have a good time, and is confident Costanza’s team will reach its attendance goal.
“They did a good job with calculating out the amount of cars per so many minutes, and average of kids that are in each car,” he said. “It makes it flow.”
Additional Eggstravaganza sponsors include the Plum Community Center, State Farm, Springer Insurance Agency, S&T Bank and Nesbit’s Lanes.
