A 14-year-old Avonmore girl is accused of being high on drugs Monday morning when she took her mother’s car and led Gilpin police on a high-speed chase before crashing, according to police.

Gilpin police Chief Chris Fabec did not identify the girl but said she faces juvenile charges including reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs. He did not say what drugs were suspected to be in her system.

The girl took her mother’s car and eventually headed onto Route 66 with four passengers between the ages of 14 and 16, according to Fabec. The passengers have not been charged.

Fabec said he pursued the car as it weaved in and out of traffic in no-passing zones and reached 70 mph.

The car veered off the road in neighboring Bethel Township, went down an incline and came to a stop in a wooded area about 11 a.m. No one was injured. The chief said the five teens got out of the car and started to run, but they stopped when he ordered them to do so.

“I couldn’t see the driver (during the pursuit), and I didn’t see it was kids until they got out of the car,” Fabec said.
