Police acting on tip nab 2 stolen guns, drugs in Tarentum; suspect jailed

Police said they charged a Tarentum man with multiple felonies after officers got a tip he was illegally buying and selling guns.

Jarrell Miller, 36, of the 200 block of Conroy Way, faces felony charges that include two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, two counts of receiving stolen property and possession of drugs with the intent to deliver — all felonies — according to a criminal complaint.

Miller was taken to the Allegheny County Jail after bond was denied at his arraignment before District Judge Carolyn S. Bengel. He faces a preliminary hearing before Bengel on March 30.

Agents from the state Attorney General’s Office along with officers from Tarentum and Harrison wrote in a criminal complaint charging Miller that they received “credible information” that he was buying firearms off the street.

Investigators said they were specifically searching for four guns that were reported as stolen to Harrison police in 2021 and this year.

While searching Miller’s home, an officer seized a bag filled with 9.2 grams of cocaine along with a scale that was discovered in the bottom drawer of a gas stove, the complaint said.

Two officers who flipped over a sofa in the home said they noticed the fabric along the edge was “hanging loose.”

When the officers tore the rest of the fabric away, a pair of handguns, a cellphone and a half bottle of d’Usse cognac fell out, they said.

Miller told the officers he “was looking for that bottle of cognac but couldn’t remember where I put it,” according to his arrest papers.

One of the guns was a Taurus 9 mm and the other a Smith & Wesson 9 mm, both of which had been reported stolen.

Investigators said Miller was previously convicted of a felony and is not permitted to own a gun.
