Police: Bullet fired by Vandergrift woman during argument went through neighboring child's bedroom
Vandergrift police arrested a woman Monday after neighbors told them a bullet fired from her house went through a wall into their child’s bedroom, hitting a mirror and a chair before lodging into another wall.
A couple told police they were in another upstairs room with their child when the shot was fired.
Nobody was injured.
Wendy Lea Caldwell, 64, of the 500 block of Franklin Avenue was charged with three counts of reckless endangerment and a count of criminal mischief, which are misdemeanors.
She was released from custody on a $10,000 unsecured bond, She is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec on April 11, according to court records.
Caldwell’s husband told officers who responded to a 911 call for a domestic incident at their home March 26 that his wife was playing with his AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle when it fired, according to a criminal complaint.
Police confiscated the weapon, which had been loaded with the single round that was fired, the complaint said.
Investigators said Caldwell fired the rifle from an upstairs room in her home. The bullet went through the window frame and the outside wall of their neighbor’s house where it hit a mirror, the top of the child’s chair and then lodged into the wall across the room, according to the complaint.
Police said Caldwell was drunk when they questioned her, and she was upset that her husband was filing for divorce because of her drinking.
After officers took Caldwell into custody, her husband told them they were arguing and his wife pointed the rifle at him, the complaint said. He declined to give a written statement, police said.
