An Armstrong County man who must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life was arrested by state police after, they say, he failed to notify them when he moved out of his Parks Township home six months ago.

John Robert Kunkle Jr., 60, of the 1100 block of Johnson Street in Parks Township was charged with a felony count of failing to register with state police as a sex offender. He is being detained in the Armstrong County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 cash bond, according to court records.

Kunkle faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge James Andring on June 16.

Police said they learned Kunkle was not living at the Parks Township house while they were doing Megan’s Law compliance checks, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.

A trooper went to Kunkle’s home May 10 and found the lawn so overgrown that it was impossible to check the perimeter of the house, the complaint said.

The front door of the house also was padlocked from the outside, and there was no response to repeated knocks on the door, according to police.

The trooper canvassed the neighborhood for information about Kunkle and was told by a neighbor that he had not stayed overnight at the property for more than six months, police said.

The neighbor told police that Kunkle was living with his girlfriend at his father’s house in Westmoreland County, according to the complaint.

Kunkle was found guilty in 1991 of a felony count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse along with counts of indecent assault and corruption of minors, according to court records.

He was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison and designated a lifetime sex offender.

People on the Megan’s Law sex offender list are required to register with the state police and notify them when they change addresses.
