An Arnold woman is facing felony charges in connection with a December incident in which police said a baby boy for whom she was caring suffered an opioid overdose.

Police said Johna Sonya Price, 35, had been caring for a relative’s baby at her Arnold home Dec. 5 when Price found the boy unresponsive and took him to Alle-Kiski Medical Center in New Kensington.

Medical staff there reported the baby was “lifeless, unresponsive and exhibited pinpointed pupils indicative of an opiate drug overdose,” according to a criminal complaint filed this month against Price.

EMS crews from New Kensington and Lower Burrell were called to the medical center and delivered the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, also known as Narcan, to the baby. The complaint said the baby was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh after his condition stabilized.

A lab test done at Children’s Hospital showed several illegal substances in the baby’s bloodstream, including heroin and fentanyl, according to the complaint. The complaint did not say how police believe the drugs got into the baby’s system.

The complaint said a search of Price’s home turned up nearly 10 grams of heroin in a downstairs closet, along with a glass pipe with marijuana residue in it, a digital scale, a marijuana grinder, THC cartridges and a device used to smoke the THC.

Price faces felony charges of child endangerment and drug possession with intent to deliver and other lesser drug charges. A preliminary hearing scheduled for this week was postponed until July 25.

Court records show Price is represented by attorney Walter James Nalducci III of Pittsburgh. He couldn’t be reached by a reporter Monday.
