A Parks Township man faces multiple felony sex charges, including the rape of a child, after, police say, he got drunk, crawled into a 6-year-old girl’s bed and sexually assaulted her.

In addition to the child rape charge, Nathan Raymond Bortz, 34, of Jackson Street, faces a count of unlawful contact with a minor and three counts of aggravated indecent assault of a child, all felonies, according to court records.

He also faces charges of corruption of a minor, endangering the welfare of children and indecent exposure.

Bortz is being detained in the Armstrong County Jail after failing to post a $50,000 cash bond. He faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge James Andring on March 9.

Police said the investigation began with a state ChildLine call placed by the girl’s teacher after the child told her what happened and said it hurt for her to walk and sit, according to his arrest papers.

A forensic interview with the child was conducted on Jan. 6 at the Kay’s Cottage victim advocacy center in Kittanning, the complaint said.

The girl told the caseworker that she was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom while her mother slept upstairs when she was sexually assaulted by Bortz, police said.

The girl also underwent a medical exam, police said. The results were not included in the criminal complaint.

Bortz was interviewed on Feb. 3, by a case worker from the Armstrong County office of Children Youth & Families and told them that, shortly after 9 p.m. the night before Thanksgiving, he started drinking while watching YouTube videos and that he consumed 18 cans of beer in about three hours, the complaint said.

He told the caseworker that, while he did not recall the exact details of what transpired after he got drunk, he remembered going into a downstairs bedroom and that he thought the person in the bed was the girl’s mother, according to the complaint.

When interviewed by police, Bortz said he couldn’t recall details from the night because he had “way too much to drink” but he told them that it was “possible” he went into the bedroom as the girl slept and sexually assaulted her, the complaint said.
