Lower Burrell police charged a woman with aggravated assault after she was accused of throwing an ax at her boyfriend and attacking him with scissors.

Brittany Lynn Betts, 32, of Lower Burrell faces two counts of aggravated assault with the attempt to cause bodily injury with a deadly weapon.

A preliminary hearing before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec is set for Nov. 14.

According to a criminal complaint, officers were dispatched Friday to the 4200 block of Lowe Road for a 911 hang-up call. Dispatchers said they called the phone number and spoke with Betts, who said everything was OK and she had called 911 accidentally.

When officers arrived at the home, they met a man who said Betts was his girlfriend, according to the complaint. He told officers Betts was “tweaking” and that she attacked him, police said.

The man showed police “various slice-type marks” from Betts attacking him with a pair of scissors, officers wrote in the complaint. Officers also said they saw multiple nonpuncture, lacerations on his chest. He also had a laceration near his armpits, police said.

He told police he took Betts to the ground and got the scissors off her, but Betts then grabbed a hatchet and was chasing him around the yard, the complaint said. He eventually was able to take the ax from Betts, police said.

Betts was taken into custody at the scene.

The man gave police a written statement and provided officers with the scissors and hatchet, the complaint said. He also gave police a small baggie of suspected cocaine, which he said Betts snorted, causing her behavior, police said.
