Police search for suspects who allegedly tried to steal ATM from Cheswick Sheetz
Allegheny Valley Regional Police are on the hunt for several people who allegedly attempted to steal an ATM from a Cheswick Sheetz on Monday evening.
Four people, who police believe to be juveniles, used a dolly to wheel the PNC bank machine from the gas station to a waiting pickup truck outside, according to AVRP Chief Michael Naviglia. From preliminary reports, Naviglia said, it appears the four were wearing masks.
As the suspects tried to load the machine into the bed of the truck, the chief said, an AVRP patrolman arrived at the scene. That caused the four to drop the machine and flee, Naviglia said.
Police pursued the white pickup through the area and onto Route 28 before cutting off the chase as it reached high speeds, Naviglia said.
Another vehicle at the scene, which Naviglia said appeared to be associated with the suspects, was reported stolen from Pittsburgh, he said.
Photos of the scene also show a Pennsylvania license plate atop the collapsed ATM, but the chief said its origins remain unclear.
Naviglia said police are actively investigating the incident in collaboration with other local departments.
