A West Deer man who is prohibited from owning a firearm was charged with a felony after police officers responding to a dispute said they found a loaded shotgun next to his nightstand.

David Meadows, 33, , was charged with one count of illegal possession of a firearm along with simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Meadows was released from custody after posting a $2,500 unsecured bond. He faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Tom Swan on June 1.

Police responding to a call for a dispute on May 11 wrote in a criminal complaint charging Meadows that they arrived to find a group of people watching as Meadows and a woman were arguing outside the home.

The woman told police that she and Meadows began arguing at the Xtra Innings Sports Bar and Grille on Saxonburg Boulevard and that he struck her in the face with her cellphone, the complaint said.

Police spoke to the owner of the tavern who said he witnessed Meadows hit the woman with the telephone, the complaint said.

Police said they confiscated the weapon.

Meadows has numerous felony convictions and is not permitted to possess a firearm, according to police.
