A Plum woman who was a postal worker is accused of stealing gift cards from the mail.

Dorothy Petrick, 56, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh this week on a charge of theft of mail by a postal employee, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say that last December, Petrick stole $60 worth of gift cards intended to be delivered by mail.

The case was investigated by the Postal Service Office of Inspector General and the Lower Burrell Police Department.

Lower Burrell police Chief Tim Weitzel said officers received a report in January that a resident mailed three gift cards worth $20 each to three people who never received them.

A phone message left for Petrick wasn’t returned Wednesday.

Shortly after Lower Burrell police began investigating the case, Weitzel said the Postal Service Office of Inspector General took over the investigation, Weitzel said.

Attempts to reach the Postal Service Office of Inspector General and the Postal Service for comment weren’t successful Wednesday .

Margaret Philbin, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh, said Petrick will be charged via summons.
