Cleanup continues at Prospect Cemetery in Brackenridge after a late-June storm caused up to $10,000 in damage.

“We had a real mess here,” said Cindy Homburg, cemetery president. “It was a ton of damage.”

She estimated at least $6,000 in tree damage from the June 22 storm, which pummeled the region, knocking out electricity and damaging several homes.

At the cemetery, tree limbs were strewn about the 13-acre site along Freeport Road.A shed was smashed, a cart was damaged and at least five flagpoles were snapped in half.

“No full trees came down, but the limbs on some of these are as big as a full tree,” Homburg said.

Four large limbs fell onto Prospect Street and destroyed a fence. One limb landed on the storage shed and ripped down two walls. Another fell across Ninth Avenue.

Homburg said insurance will cover some of the cost but not all since the storm falls under the “Act of God” clause.

“We get donations, but we count on those to pay the grass cutter,” she said. “It’s up to us to get this taken care of.”

Several board members and neighbors pitched in to clean the hundreds of veterans’ flags that were tossed around.

Countless tree limbs have been cut and hauled off. The board still is seeking someone to help repair the shed.

“It was limbs on top of limbs,” Homburg said. “Thankfully, those are gone, and it’s getting to looking back to normal. Once we get the shed fixed, it won’t be too bad.”
