Free ‘Y’ gas service to be lost
Phillips Gas and Oil Co. notified Tarentum council that the local YMCA will lose the privilege of receiving free gas. Phillips had given Tarentum a certain amount of free natural gas in return for courtesies extended when the gas lines were first laid.

Springdale tops Freeport, 35-31
Springdale edged closer to the Section V basketball title with a 35-31 win over Freeport. Ed Ambrose canned 20 points for the orange and black while Albert Owcar netted nine.

Five-municipality police force proposed
Buffalo Township supervisors discussed a plan put forth by the Butler Regional Planning Commission that would form a police force to cover the municipalities of Buffalo, Jefferson, Clinton and Winfield townships, along with Saxonburg Borough.

Proposed rifle vote doubtful
After a stray bullet hit an empty school building in Washington Township during the previous hunting season, a resident wanted a vote on an ordinance that would prohibit high-powered rifles and pistols. Westmoreland County officials said they were reluctant to put such issues on ballots.

End nears for Eckerd in RIDC Park
The first three rounds of layoffs at the Eckerd Drug distribution center in RIDC Park has started. The Jean Contu Group of Canada announced the closing three months ago in a move that will result in the loss of 150 jobs.

Murtha dies at 77
U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, whose Congressional district included Armstrong County, died in a Virginia hospital at age 77. First elected in 1974, he was the first Vietnam-era veteran to be elected to the U.S. House.

Hearing slated for Freeport school closings
The Freeport Area School Board will hold a public hearing on the planned closing of the kindergarten center and the junior high in Freeport Borough. The district is building a $33 million middle school in Buffalo Township.
