Parnassus to build memorial to service men
A granite shaft, seven feet in height, will be erected by Parnassus borough at the corner of Freeport, Fourth and Main streets. A bronze tablet commemorating the living and dead heroes will be installed by the Mathews Bronze Co.

Warning sounded on gas use ban
Local places of amusement were warned that they must comply fully with restrictions on natural gas usage since a shortage threatens war industries. The ban includes motion picture theaters, bowling alleys and saloons.

Arnold glass workers filing damage claim
Union members at the now-closed American St. Gobain glass plant in Arnold will file a claim with the federal government that their job loss was the result of imported products. Each worker would receive $80 per week for one year.

Police get OK to hunt deer in Fox Chapel
After two years of failed attempts to control the deer population in the 8.5-square-mile borough, Fox Chapel police have received a permit to hunt from the state Game Commission. There is no limit on how many deer the police can bag.

Evacuation ends for about 200 Creighton residents
About 200 residents of Freeport Road in the Creighton section of East Deer returned home after evacuation three days earlier due to a derailed tanker of a Norfolk Southern train leaking toxic materials into the Allegheny River. No cause was determined for the accident.

Cemetery association gets OK to expand
Frazer supervisors gave the Pittsburgh Diocese’s cemetery association approval to build a mausoleum and chapel at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery. The new facility will include a chapel and space for 3,500 crypts.

St. Joseph ends long skid to North Catholic
After losing 16 in a row to North Catholic — 15 by more than 20 points — St. Joseph finally defeated the Trojanettes, 80-66. Mallory Heinle led the Spartans with 34 points and 10 rebounds.
