Arnold councilman given jail warden post
James M. Keating, elected chairman of Arnold council two days earlier, will resign that post after being elected warden of the Westmoreland county jail. Keating, vying with 11 other applicants, was chosen on the 30th ballot.

Tarentum spoiled the basketball coaching debut of Freeport’s Charley Dale with a 34-21 victory over the Yellowjackets. Stan Sagath led the Redcats with 12 points while Freddy Costantino led Freeport with 10 points.

A-K miners walk out in grief
About 500 coal miners from three Alle-Kiski facilities walked out to “express their grief and anger” over the murder of UMW reformist Jock Yablonski, his wife and daughter. Yablonski had made a number of local friends in his recent union presidency run.

Leechburg phone users add toll-free area
AllTel customers in the 845 and 842 dialing exchanges in the Leechburg area can now call those in the New Kensington 335, 337 and 339 exchanges without toll charges. A slight increase in monthly bills will still occur.

Southwest to begin service to Pittsburgh
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines will begin serving the Pittsburgh International Airport in May. Kent George, airport authority director, had been trying to lure the low-fare carrier to Pittsburgh for six years.

Soup kitchen forced to close
Lighthouse Ministries’ soup kitchen in Arnold was temporarily closed a day after it opened because it did not have an occupancy permit from the city. Officials said a final inspection must be completed before a permit can be issued.

Burrell Lake Park repairs covered
Lower Burrell Council said a grant and an unexpected inheritance from a businessman who recently died will cover the costs of playground improvements at Burrell Lake Park. Part of the bequest was earmarked for parks.
