County farmers against daylight saving system
Westmoreland County farmers are against any attempt to revive the daylight saving system. The county farm bureau said previous daylight savings “worked more hardships on the farmer and his family than other thing that could be devised.”

Lt. Sumner is killed on Iwo Jima
Mrs. Audrey Massart Sumner of Tarentum received the tragic news from the Navy that her husband, 1/Lt. Paul Rogers Sumner, had been killed in action Feb. 19. He was serving with the Fourth Marines on Iwo Jima.

4 school districts eye vo-tech talks
School directors from New Kensington-Arnold, Burrell, Kiski Area and Franklin Regional have agreed to enter planning talks to establish a vocational-technical school somewhere in northern Westmoreland County by 1973.

Mayor urges reduction in council seats
A group of Vandergrift voters, led by Mayor Alan Mikula, petitioned Westmoreland County Court to reduce the size of borough council from 12 members to seven. Supporters said a smaller council would be more efficient.

Shields finishes 2nd in D-II championship
Burrell graduate Jordan Shields of Mercyhurst College, defending national collegiate Division II champion at 165 pounds, lost his repeat bid to Travis Eggars of Upper Iowa. Shields (37-4) had won 21 consecutive matches.

Deer Lakes hires second-in-command
The Deer Lakes School Board hired Roberta A. Barnes as the district’s assistant superintendent. Barnes is with the Avella School District and will remain there until the school districts can agree on a date to end her tenure there.
