Borough gives money to fight city annexation
An appropriation of $100 was submitted by Tarentum council to the County League of Boroughs and Townships to fight the proposed, forcible annexation by Pittsburgh. Other municipalities have also joined the fight.

100 chickens lost in coop flames
Nearly 100 chickens were destroyed when fire swept through a large frame chicken coop at the L.T. Aikins residence on Juniata Street in Natrona Heights. Quick work by Harrison firemen prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby garage.

Vandergrift council buys land for lots
Borough council passed two resolutions to purchase more than 63,000 square feet between Farragut and Columbia avenues for a parking lot in the downtown business district. The lot will contain 128 parking spaces.

Demolition of PPG complex stuns Ford City
The borough is powerless in forcing PPG Industries to keep its buildings standing. The company, which spawned the birth of Ford City in the 1890s, closed up in September of 1993, idling its remaining 300 workers.

Burrell, Valley share section crown
Burrell defeated Valley, 9-3, in the regular season finale to tie the Vikings for the section title. Both schools will receive a section-winning plaque from the WPIAL – Burrell’s third in four seasons and Valley’s first since 1970.

Fire unit merger considered
Lower Burrell’s fire companies could be asked to again consolidate in an attempt to streamline operations. Under the plan, the Braeview fire company would merge with fire company #3, which covers 80 percent of the city.

Freeport board hears drilling proposal
The Freeport Area School District is set to allow drilling for natural gas on vacant land that it owns. A proposal was made to drill on a 30-acre tract the school district owns adjacent to South Buffalo Elementary School.
