Eureka Fire Rescue personnel launch a boat under the Tarentum Bridge after a man reportedly jumped from the bridge shortly after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A man who jumped from the Tarentum Bridge into the Allegheny River on Tuesday morning died before he could be taken to a hospital, according to paramedics at the scene.

River rescue units were launched after the man apparently jumped from the bridge shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Motorists had reported seeing the man on the bridge with one leg hanging over a concrete barrier.

Rescuers reported reaching the man within a few minutes, but they needed assistance removing him from the river, still swollen from recent heavy rains.

Eureka Fire Rescue EMS pulled the man to a boat launch beneath the bridge with the assistance of a New Kensington Fire Department river rescue crew.

An Allegheny County Medical Examiner crew arrived to the scene just before 1 p.m. to retrieve the body. He appeared to be a middle-aged white man.

A purple sedan apparently belonging to the man was left on the New Kensington-bound side of the bridge near the border between Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
