Springdale resident Amy Ross sat inside the borough recreation center Monday, frustrated and wondering how long it would take to return to her apartment along Butler Street after its roof partially collapsed Monday.
“I was gonna move before winter,” Ross said, as she made arrangements for a friend to temporarily care for her cat. “I should’ve done it, but the deal didn’t work out.”
Ross was among a dozen residents of an apartment building in the 200 block of Butler Street that were evacuated.
No injuries were reported. The damage to the roof could not be seen from the ground.
The residents sat inside the gym while American Red Cross volunteers distributed food and members of the Allegheny Valley Regional Emergency Management Agency offered to walk the three dogs that were waiting out the disaster in cages.
Emergency crews, including Springdale and Frazer volunteer fire departments, spent the afternoon at the scene to assess the damage.
“They’re going up to the roof to check on things,” said Bruno Moretti, the borough’s emergency management coordinator. “The residents will not be going back home today.”
Ross said complaints over building maintenance have been ongoing. One resident showed a video of a plastic baby pool set up in his apartment to catch the rain leaking through the ceiling.
A person who answered at Upper Saint Clair-based property management company, GennLuxe, referred questions through email to the administrative team. The company did not respond.
Moretti cited Sunday’s heavy rain as a possible cause for the collapse but said he wouldn’t know more until a report came back from the structural engineer.
He said GennLuxe would be responsible for hotel arrangements for the displaced tenants. Moretti could not estimate a timeline for repairs.
First responders planned to allow residents back into their homes for 15 minutes to gather necessities, he said.
