The New Kensington bridge over the Allegheny River will be painted in a darker, royal blue color. Painting will be part of a two-year, $25 million preservation project.

Motorists crossing the New Kensington Bridge this week can expect rolling closures in East Deer and New Kensington.

PennDOT District 11 announced Monday there will be intermittent traffic stoppages of 10 minutes or less from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

The stoppages are necessary to allow for paint containment installation work and vehicles to move in and out.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra time while traveling along Freeport Road over the Allegheny River in East Deer in Allegheny County and New Kensington in Westmoreland County.

The ongoing work to the bridge is part of a $25 million preservation project expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.

Scheduled work includes a full painting of the existing structure, concrete repairs, structural steel repairs, adding a latex overlay, expansion dam replacement, installation of new light poles and luminaries and minor approach roadway work.

A six-week full-closure and detour of the bridge is anticipated at a later date.

Motorists can monitor conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com.
