J.J. Novotny, 2, helps his mother, Elizabeth, and father, Josh, create a sawdust carpet to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi at Our Lady of Victory Church in Springdale Township on June 12. The centuries-old practice of creating the colorful sawdust carpets was picked up in 1943 at the former Holy Martyrs Church in West Tarentum. After the building was closed last year as part of a merger that created Our Lady of Angels Parish, the celebration was moved to the church in Springdale.

Nobody can recall a year since 1943 when rain washed out the annual tradition at Holy Martyrs Church in West Tarentum of marking the Feast of Corpus Christi by creating sawdust carpets. To prevent wind from causing havoc on the temporary art installations, water is sprinkled on the designs throughout the day to keep it from shifting with the winds. The annual celebration was moved to Lady of Victory Church in Springdale Township after Holy Martyrs was closed last year to create Our Lady of Angels Parish.
