Allegheny Township public works director Roger Schwarz holds a star to be placed atop a 40-foot tree made of lights at the township’s municipal building and police department. The star was hung in preparation for the township’s Light the Season event and tree lighting, which was Friday. The star was made by the late Shawn Kuhn, a former public works superintendent. It is hung in his honor each year.

Pittsburgh Brewing Co. is branching out with the addition of rye whiskey that is being made at its new distillery in East Deer. The whiskey is being made using grain grown from heirloom seeds and the same formula followed by Pennsylvania distillers during the 1800s, when some of the finest whiskey was produced in the state.
