Next month, Sherry Tamski will begin a six-year term as a Kiski Township supervisor, the second woman to be elected to the post in the township’s nearly 190-year history.
Township Secretary Patrick Bono confirmed Tamski’s second supervisor status with available records at the township.
Being the second female supervisor ever doesn’t surprise Tamski, 53, who is also the township’s treasurer.
“I don’t really look at the position that way,” she said. “It just feels natural to me. This is my community, and I really want to be a part of it.”
Tamski noted that other women serve in local government in nearby Apollo and North Apollo. Her cousin, Mary L. Trunzo, has been a supervisor and the secretary/treasurer for Loyalhanna Township for 20 years.
“I enjoy working with the supervisors — I value their knowledge and look forward to working with them,” she said.
Not surprisingly, Tamski said her parents inspired her work in public service.
“I know one thing,” said Tamski’s mother, Diana Tamski, 78, “when it comes to spending money, she is very good at cutting costs and balancing a budget.”
Tamski’s mother, who lives in the township, encouraged her daughter to run because of her business acumen.
“I told her don’t let anyone deter you because you are a female or deter you because you are not in their circle,” she said.
Tamski is an Apollo-Ridge graduate who earned an associate’s degree in business management and worked in the medical field and banking.
She started working for the township in 2019 as a financial assistant, then temporary secretary and treasurer when Donna Piper resigned in January of 2020, and then treasurer.
Tamski said she likes the work ethic, her co-workers and friendly vibe at the township office.
“I’m the treasurer. I mow the grass. I shovel the walk,” she said. “There’s no such thing as ‘it’s not my job.’ ”
