Fawn and Harrison residents who live near the intersection of Route 908 and Saxonburg Boulevard will have a new place to shop within the next week.
The Dollar General under construction since early summer at 1250 Route 908 is expected to open its doors in the coming days, store officials confirmed.
It will offer food items, medications, pet food and household goods.
“It definitely serves the purpose of a corner store,” Fawn Secretary/Treasurer Pam Ponsart said.
“It’ll save people from driving to Walmart.”
A new store typically creates up to 10 jobs, according to representatives from the Dollar General corporate media team.
“When choosing store locations, our real estate strategy is simple, as we strive to add locations that meet customers’ needs,” said an email from the corporate media team.
“Often, we invest in communities where other retailers cannot or will not serve.”
Ponsart said store officials haven’t notified the township of an official opening date.
“It looks like they’re getting pretty close,” she said. “They were bringing in shelving last week.”
The store sits on the property that formerly held Drahos Live Bait Store and gas station. It’s a busy intersection that separates Fawn and Harrison residential neighborhoods by the state-owned road.
Despite three other Dollar General stores in neighboring towns, Ponsart believes residents will appreciate the convenience offered by the new location, especially residents along Ekastown Road and farther down Route 908.
“You run out of something, it’s right here,” she said. “It saves time. You only have to go up the road.”
Other nearby stores are along South Pike Road in Buffalo Township, on Broadview Boulevard in Harrison and on High Street in Freeport.
Headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tenn., Dollar General has more than 19,000 stores in 47 states, according to its website. It employs more than 185,000 people.
According to store officials, “We believe the addition of each new store provides positive economic benefits, including additional access to affordable products for customers, the creation of new jobs for local residents and career development opportunities for our employees and the generation of additional tax revenue for the city.”
In addition, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $238 million in grants since 1993 to nonprofits in or near communities where stores are located.
