Additional work to fix a railroad bridge where rocks fell onto the Route 28 expressway last week is underway.
Crews are adding shielding under the railroad structure, this time southbound, between Exit 11 (Harmar) and Exit 12 (Cheswick) with single-lane restrictions for travelers.
Northbound Route 28 was closed early Friday after stones fell from an overhead railroad bridge. The highway reopened to traffic by 12:30 p.m.
Bridge inspectors determined there were no structural concerns, PennDOT officials said. Shoring, a temporary support, is being installed on the underside of the bridge to prevent material from falling until permanent repairs can be made.
Nicole Haney, PennDOT spokeswoman, said the southbound shielding installation should be completed by 5 p.m. Monday.
She said crews from Swank Construction Co. were conducting the southbound work Monday with single-lane restrictions already in place for projects on Route 28, between the Harmar and Russellton/Creighton interchanges.
