The first few days of the summerlong renovation project on Route 356 in Allegheny Township has passed without any major problems.

Route 356 will be closed in three segments, with activity underway initially in the area from Weinels Crossroads to Piper Road.

The entire project is expected to last until November.

Township police Chief Duane Fisher told supervisors that his biggest concern is PennDOT’s line painting near the intersection of Route 356 and White Cloud Road looks like a continuous curve in the road. He fears motorists might miss a stop sign at that intersection.

He wants to remind residents that White Cloud Road still has a stop sign at the intersection. And while there have been no accidents, there have been “a couple of near misses.”

Township officials expressed concern that some residents living along Route 356 hadn’t been notified of project details by PennDOT as late as April 1, three days before the project started.

Fisher said the state was starting to post signage on side streets Wednesday.

Roundabout plans ongoing
Planning continues for the roundabout that will be installed at the intersection of Route 356 and LeBelleVue Road near Kiski Area High School.
Supervisors on Monday are expected to approve a maintenance agreement resolution where the township will provide signage, markings and possible future sidewalks in that area.
Fisher said the roundabout will be a “safer transition than a traffic signal with a better traffic flow ” at the dangerous intersection.
Also, a left-turning lane will be added for motorists crossing the bridge over Pine Run and making a left onto Melwood Road.
Construction on the roundabout is at least a year away. The project is in the design phase, according to officials.
