An 80-year-old man was killed in South Buffalo when his riding lawnmower flipped over a hillside late Tuesday, officials said.

Police did not yet release the victim’s name. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened at 660 Freeport Road.

“As best as we could tell, he was cutting grass last evening,” South Buffalo police Chief Jeffrey Kuntz said Wednesday. “His yard slopes toward the road; the ground was wet and gave way. The equipment toppled on top of him.”

The victim lived by himself, Kuntz said.

It was a sharp-eyed school bus driver who alerted Kuntz to the incident about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“She was able to call me without alerting the children,” he said.

Kuntz had been monitoring the buses Wednesday morning before school and was only a few cars behind. He arrived at the scene of the incident seconds later.
