More northbound, southbound Route 28 headaches to start Tuesday
PennDOT announced more headaches Friday for motorists on Route 28.
Beginning Tuesday, the on-ramp from Fox Chapel Road to southbound Route 28 in O’Hara will experience nightly closures, and single-lane restrictions will occur on northbound Route 28 between the RIDC Park (Exit 10) and the Russelton/Creighton (Exit 13) interchanges.
The on-ramp from Fox Chapel Road to southbound Route 28 will close to traffic from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night through mid-August. Crews will conduct pavement repairs.
The suggested detour is to take Fox Chapel Road to Freeport Road, turn right onto Freeport Road, then turn right onto the ramp to Route 28 Pittsburgh/Tarentum and stay left for Route 28 southbound toward Pittsburgh.
Single-lane restrictions on Route 28 will continue a half-mile south of the Fox Chapel Road interchange through late-August.
The work is a part of the $15.32 million project to improve about 3.5 miles of Route 28 between the Delafield Avenue exit (Exit 7) and the Harmar Township line, approximately 1.75 miles north of the RIDC Park (Exit 10) interchange. Ramp closures will occur as needed, with many occurring overnight.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
Long-term single-lane restrictions and shoulder closure also will occur on northbound Route 28 from the RIDC Park (Exit 10) interchange to the Russelton/Creighton (Exit 13) interchange from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through late November. Crews from Swank Construction Co. will perform shoulder and lane patching and paving work.
The work is part of the $27.68 million highway restoration project on Route 28 between the Harmar/I-76/Route 910 (Exit 11) and Russellton/Creighton (Exit 13) interchanges. During the construction, long-term, single-lane restrictions will occur, along with an 11-day single-lane closure in each direction near the northern limits of the project.
Work is expected to be completed between the end of 2023 and early 2024.
