Demolition of the former power plant in Springdale is nearing its end — and residents will have a chance to learn more about those plans during a public meeting Monday.

Springdale Police, property owner Charah Solutions and demolition contractor B&B Wrecking will host a community meeting at 5 p.m. Monday at the borough building, 325 School St., to share information on the demolition of the boiler house at the former Cheswick Generating Station.

“At Monday’s meeting, we will discuss the conventional demolition of the boiler house building on the Charah property, traffic and road detours and closures, and we will have a question-and-answer session for anyone who wishes to speak,” said police Chief Derek Dayoub.

Dayoub said representatives from Charah, B&B Wrecking and Springdale Police will field questions from the public.

Scott Reschly, vice president of operations for Charah, said the meeting’s purpose is “to describe our current plan to bring down the boiler.”

The company had planned to demolish that building by using explosives in September 2023, but those plans changed after an injunction lawsuit.

Charah officials in January determined they would tear down the structure conventionally instead.

The meeting will be similar to the one officials held in November for the demolition of the plant’s trestle bridge, said Bruno Moretti, coordinator of the Allegheny Valley Regional Emergency Management Agency.

Officials will discuss items including how and when the structure will be demolished, how long it will last and any anticipated traffic detours, Moretti said.

Dayoub said officials will give a tentative date for the project at Monday’s meeting.

CPERG, a subsidiary of Charah Solutions, has been decommissioning and remediating the power plant site since it ceased operations in 2022.
