Springdale received more than $500,000 in grant money from PennDOT to make more upgrades to its traffic signals.

The money will be used to upgrade the traffic signals at Pittsburgh and School streets and at Pittsburgh and James streets.

Improvements will include new signal supports, LED lights, pedestrian accommodations and ADA accommodations, among others.

The grant money is part of $15.4 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funding going to 38 municipalities to fund 50 projects.

Pennsylvania’s Red Light Enforcement program was created to improve safety at Philadelphia intersections with traffic signals by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue. Money from fines collected goes to traffic safety projects throughout the state.

Springdale received $192,000 in state grant funding in 2018 for other traffic light projects at intersections including at the Butler and Colfax streets intersections with Pittsburgh Street.

Springdale officials previously said they wanted the grant money to update the signs and lights to make them brighter and more visible.
