An Alle-Kiski Valley music teacher’s legacy will be remembered now in the form of scholarships.

Allegheny Valley school directors on Tuesday accepted a distribution from the estate of Mabel C. Pratt for $10,000 to create the Mabel C. Pratt Music-Arts Scholarship Fund.

The move is in accordance with Pratt’s will.

Pratt died March 29. She was 94.

According to her obituary, Pratt was a piano teacher for 22 years.

Hamsini Rajgopal, the district’s finance and operations director, said that each year upon graduation, two Springdale High School seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher who are accepted into a post-high school music or theater arts program will be awarded $1,000 each from the scholarship fund.

If more than two students meet that criteria, then the two students with the highest GPA will be awarded those scholarships, Rajgopal said. If there is less than $1,000 in the fund, it will be divided equally among the two students.

“Of course, we are extremely grateful and acknowledge this generous contribution,” Rajgopal said.
