The monthslong lobby improvement project at Springdale Jr.-Sr. High School will be nearly complete by the end of next month, according to district Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Jay Zangrille.
Construction of larger restrooms in the lobby, as well as a separate one for use by one person at a time, is ongoing. The restrooms, which will be to the left of the lobby entrance, will be wheelchair accessible. That’s a feature they currently lack.
Zangrille said crews are working on tiling the new lavatories and finishing tasks in the ceiling.
“You can finally start to see the project come together,” he said.
The bathrooms and lobby likely won’t be complete ahead of the high school’s fall play, meaning play-goers will have to use a side entrance to get to the auditorium.
“The Witch’s Princess” is set to hit the stage for three shows between Nov. 21 and 22.
Parts of the lobby’s new HVAC systems remain on order, Zangrille said.
The equipment will arrive in December, he said, with final work finishing by the end of the year.
Work began at the school in the early summer, as the Allegheny Valley School Board voted to award $1.2 million in contracts.
By the end of July, crews had finished clearing asbestos that had been encapsulated in the ceiling of the 65-year-old building.
Repairs to the exterior of the high school’s “D wing” at its meeting last week are also ongoing as part of the same renovation project.
The repairs will address the separation of large precast concrete façade panels that have crumbled since being installed in 2012.
That work is set to be complete by the end of October, Zangrille said.
