The Springdale Township supervisors have decided to go ahead with building a road salt shed on Carson Street.
Springdale Township Commissioners President Anthony Rozzano said the board approved the shed around March. The shed would be able to store up to 350 tons of road salt.
As it stands now, the township has depended on Cheswick for its salt supply.
“By us building our own salt shed, we save $15,000 a year,” he said.
Residents had expressed concerns on whether the shed would be in compliance with state Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
Rozzano said that DEP does not require a permit for salt sheds with a capacity below 3,000 tons, but the township will be filing all necessary paperwork with DEP in any case.
Rick Schwartz, who lives in the Harwick neighborhood, expressed concerns during last week’s supervisors’ meeting about the salt shed, saying the supervisors did not discuss the shed’s logistics when they approved it.
“All of these issues, permits, costs, designs, savings are extremely important to have (transparency) with the public,” Schwartz said.
He requested the project be put on hold.
Orrville resident Don Klebine disagreed with Schwartz, saying the township does need a salt shed.
“Try to work with this township, not against the township,” he said.
