The Springdale office for the Allegheny County Health Department’s Women, Infants and Children office will reopen Thursday after being closed for about two months.

The office was one of two WIC locations unexpectedly shuttered at the beginning of October because of increased demand in other parts of the county.

At the time, the Health Department predicted both offices would be closed through December and into January.

“We are very pleased to be able to reopen earlier than expected for our WIC participants,” interim Director Ron Sugar said in a statement.

The other closed office, in Mt. Oliver, is being renovated and will remained closed. Sugar expected the Mt. Oliver office, which serves about 1,700 clients, to reopen in February.

The department said clients who had scheduled appointments before the office’s closure were able to keep those appointment times and dates — but they had to go to the Turtle Creek office, about 15 to 20 miles away. The Springdale office serves about 700 clients.

Sugar said that clients were notified of the close before it was made official to arrange visits at other WIC locations and “ensure there was a smooth transition.”

“There has not been any impact on our overall WIC operations due to these temporary closures,” Sugar said.

Employees at the Springdale and Mt. Oliver locations were relocated to assist with the high demand in other offices, according to the Health Department.
