Social media safety and trending scams will be the topics of discussion during a free presentation at the Allegheny Kiski Health Foundation in Harrison.
Township police will present “Street Smarts and Safety: Exploitation, Awareness and Staying in Control,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19.
The program is for all ages.
Topics include financial exploitation, safety for young adults away at college, navigating relationships in an internet-based world, sextortion and popular scams.
“We’ll talk about trends in our area and a lot about online safety,” police Chief Brian Turack said. “I think there are some risks that people aren’t always on the lookout for. This class will cover an array of what we see.
“We want to increase the awareness of trends.”
Police will offer tips on ways to protect yourself in public places and will raise awareness of some common online schemes. A popular one in recent years involves scammers impersonating family members to exploit payment from victims.
“It will be especially helpful to people who are maybe too trusting online,” Turack said.
“When you think you’re talking to someone online and buying a ticket for a show, that’s usually not really who you’re dealing with. We’re excited to get this information out.”
One of his officers, a certified instructor in Jiu-Jitsu, will give tips on ways to physically create a safe space.
The foundation is a nonprofit that supports health-related initiatives. The program will be at the office at 1 Acee Drive. Space is limited.
